Trump claims that the car deal with "Mr. Japan" is unfair, and the deadline is approaching.
Gate News bot news, according to Bloomberg, US President Trump stated on Sunday that the auto trade between the US and Japan is unfair, and if the two countries cannot reach an agreement, in just over a week, the US will impose higher tariffs on Japan.
"So we don't give Japanese cars. They won't accept our cars, right? Yet, we ship millions of their cars to the United States. It's not fair," Trump said in an interview that aired on Fox News on Sunday.
"I explained this to Japan. They understand. We have a huge trade deficit with Japan. They understand this as well," he said in his speech.
"Now we have oil. They can take a lot of oil. They can also take a lot of other things," he added.
Japan's chief negotiator Ryosei Akazawa visited Washington D.C. last week to participate in the seventh round of trade negotiations that have been ongoing for several months. As the July 9 deadline for the so-called increase in reciprocal tariffs approaches, he even extended his stay in hopes of reaching an agreement.
The Japanese government issued a statement on Sunday stating that Akizawa had "productive discussions" with U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and agreed to continue seeking a protocol that is beneficial to both Japan and the United States.
From Trump's statement in the interview, it is unclear whether Japan is close to reaching a protocol, or if it has won a long-term deferment of the comprehensive tariff increase.
Trump stated that the United States can unilaterally set trade terms with Japan.
"I want to send a letter," Trump said on Sunday, referring to a plan to inform some trading partners that the U.S. will unilaterally set tariffs. "I can send a letter to Japan, dear Mr. Japan, here is the situation. Your cars will face a 25% tariff."
