Worse than Windows 98! Musk explodes US government computer equipment and will introduce blockchain to improve efficiency.
Elon Musk tweeted on 12/9 that the U.S. government's computer systems were too outdated to pass basic audits and announced that he would assist the Trump administration with reform as a "volunteer IT consultant." He said that it is because the government does not upgrade hardware and technology, resulting in a bunch of taxpayers' money being wasted and inefficient.
Government computer equipment 'worse than Windows 98' is being criticized
Musk said that the computer and software systems of the current US government are so old that they "cannot distinguish whether the payment involves fraud or abuse", even leading to the flow of tax money to unknown places. He mocked the government: "This is why the US government cannot pass a basic audit. They often do not know where the people's tax money is spent, which is crazy."
Some netizens also shared a photo of an old computer showing the Windows 98 startup screen under his post, and jokingly said that this is the computer currently used by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in the United States. Musk responded directly, "I hope it's like this, but in reality, it's even worse than Windows 98."
The old system and lack of accountability resulted in extremely poor efficiency.
Musk said that the U.S. government has 'severely overspent' on software, but these systems are unable to function properly. He believes the problem is not entirely malicious, but rather due to the lack of accountability for results in the massive bureaucratic system, leading to a large number of officials still using outdated and inadequate hardware and software.
"If these problems are intentional, they are easy to solve," he said. Musk stressed that the real challenge lies in changing this institutional inertia and comprehensively modernizing the government's technology infrastructure.

Blockchain is expected to become a solution for government efficiency
Musk did not blame any political party, but focused on proposing technical solutions. He believes that Blockchain technology may be the best way to accelerate government accountability and technological upgrades.
Previously, Trump has expressed his hope to make the United States the global center of Crypto Assets and blockchain. Musk believes that the most basic feature of blockchain is "immutability". Assuming blockchain is introduced into the U.S. federal government, it could provide permanent records of every transaction, significantly improving audit efficiency and transparency in tax distribution.
