Will History Repeat Itself? Can XRP Dethrone Ethereum to Become the Second Largest Currency?
XRP has risen 22% this week, sparking speculation among traders and influencers that it could soon surpass Ethereum (ETH) in market value. At the current price of Ethereum at $3,203, XRP will need to rise to $6.75 per token (a 134% increase from the current value of $2.94) to surpass Ethereum's market capitalization of $397 billion. The current market capitalization of XRP is around $164 billion, leaving a gap of $233 billion. In 2018, XRP temporarily surpassed Ethereum to become the world's second largest cryptocurrency. DonAlt, a well-known cryptocurrency trader with 646,000 followers, wrote in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter): "I think XRP, seriously speaking, has the potential to temporarily surpass ETH and even BTC if things go crazy." XRP surpassed Tether (USDT) earlier this month to become the third largest cryptocurrency. Its recent growth has outpaced Ethereum, Bitcoin, and Solana, with XRP rising 433% since November compared to Ethereum's 27% increase over the same period. This potential "flippening" echoes earlier hopes of Ethereum enthusiasts that ETH could one day surpass Bitcoin's market cap, a milestone still elusive. XRP last overtook Ethereum in January 2018, during the preceding bull market. Several factors have recently driven the price increase of XRP: SEC Leadership Change: The expected resignation of Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Chairman Gary Gensler has raised optimism about a resolution in the ongoing legal battle between the regulatory agency and Ripple. Market observers believe that the SEC's dismissal of the appeal or settlement under new leadership could significantly improve XRP's prospects.Ripple's Business Expansion: Ripple has intensified its recruitment efforts in the United States, with CEO Brad Garlinghouse noting increased local business operations. Garlinghouse attributes this motivation to potential policy changes friendlier to cryptocurrencies under the incoming administration of President-elect Donald Trump.Optimistic Market Sentiment: XRP's performance has attracted attention from both retail and institutional investors. However, JPMorgan analysts recently cautioned that the demand for XRP exchange-traded fund (ETF) may not be as strong as expected, predicting a flow of around $8 billion, much lower than the capital attracted by Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs.
